A Study of Azeotrope and Acetone/Chloroform Liquid-Vapor Phase Diagram free essay sample

A Study of Azeotrope and Acetone/Chloroform Liquid-Vapor Phase Diagram Abstract: Liquid-vapor phase of acetone/chloroform was studied through distilling a series of mixtures with different mole fraction. When the mixtures were boiling, their vapor was condensed through a water column and collected in a receiving container. Refractive index was collected for starting mixture, distillate and residue for each sample. A boiling temperature versus acetone’s mole fraction was constructed to show the liquid-vapor phase diagram. The boiling temperature of azeotrope was determined to be 62. 2oC with the composition of 23% acetone and 77% chloroform. Keyword: liquid-vapor phase, acetone/chloroform mixture, azeotrope INTRODUCTION In an ideal binary mixture, the interactions between two components A and B are equal to each other. The interaction between A-A, A-B, and B-B are the same. Raoult’s law is hold in ideal liquid mixture giving that at a specific temperature, the vapor pressure of a component is proportional to its mole fraction in the mixture. In reality, many binary mixture do not follow Raoult’s law. The actual vapor pressure can be higher or less than what predicted by Raoult’s law and causes positive or negative deviation. For a positive deviation system, A-B interaction are favorable and the boiling temperature curve at different mole fraction gives a maximum. For a negative deviation system, A-B interaction are unfavorable and the boiling temperature curve shows a minimum. At maximum or minimum point on the curve, the composition of the liquid and of the vapor are the same. Such a mixture is called azeotrope. This study focuses on the mixture of acetone and chloroform. To obtain a boiling temperature vs. mole fraction diagram, a series of simple distillation will be performed. Distillation basically means boiling the mixture and the vapor is obtained in a receiving container. The liquid samples will be analyzed by refractive index. In Figure 1, the structure of acetone and chloroform shows that hydrogen bonds will likely be formed in the mixture. Therefore, favorable interactions between two components a positive deviation boiling temperature diagram are expected. EXPERIMENTAL A series of experimental mixture of acetone and chloroform were made as shown in Table 1. Each sample was distilled until obtaining a constant boiling temperature (no or very slow change in temperature when heating). As the mixture was boiled, the vapor was condense through a water column and collected. Refractive Index (RI) was obtained for starting mixture, distillate in receiver container, and residue left over for each sample. RESULT Mole fraction of acetone, boiling temperature and refractive index of starting mixture, distillate and residue are presented in Table 2. Mole fraction of acetone in starting solution was calculated by using density of acetone (0. 791 g/mole) and density of chloroform (1. 492 g/mole) (Sigma-Aldrich). The process of calculation was shown below mole acetone/chloroform = nA,B = Volume? density? 1Molecular Weight mole fraction = nA,BnA+nB The refractive index of starting solution at different mole fraction of acetone was put together in a graph as Figure 2. It was used as a calibration curve to determine the mole fraction of acetone corresponded to each boiling temperature. The equation of calibration curve is y = -0. 0857x + 1. 433 so at an obtained boiling temperature T, the mole fraction of acetone in either distillate or residue was calculated as Mole fraction=(T-1. 4433)/(-0. 0857) A graph of mole fraction of distillate and residue versus boiling temperature was shown together in Figure 3. DISCUSSION The graph of boiling point versus mole fraction of acetone of a liquid-vapor pressure in Figure 3 showed a convex down with a maximum. The shaped of the graph is similar to a positive deviation system where the interaction between components is more favorable due to hydrogen bonding between acetone and chloroform. The maxima of the graph is at 62. 2oC and the mole fraction of acetone is 0. 23. Therefore, the boiling temperature of acetone-chloroform azeotrope is 62. 2oC and its composition is approximately 23% acetone and 77% chloroform. Literature result of other study that had been done on acetone-chloroform binary system shows that the normal boiling temperature of acetone and chloroform are 56. 25oC and 61. 15oC respectively while the boiling temperature of the azeotrope is 64. 45oC. The literature composition of acetone-chloroform azeotrope is 34. 09% of acetone. Although the result of this study was a little bit lower than the literature result, it still represented the properties of a positive deviation liquid-vapor binary phase diagram with the boiling temperature of azeotrope is higher than boiling temperature of pure components. Some sources of error might come from not measuring the exact amount for each component of the mixture or not taking the correct boiling temperature during distillation. Also since this study was dealing with volatile compounds, refractive index reading might be incorrect since the sample was vaporized too quickly. CONCLUSION Azeotrope was studied through a series of prepared acetone-chloroform mixtures with different mole fraction. Distillation was performed to boil the liquid mixture and condense the vapor into a receiver. Thus, it created a binary liquid-vapor phase which was presented in the graph of Figure 1 and Figure 2. The azeotrope boiling temperature is the maximum peak of the graph in Figure 2 and the composition of the azeotrope is 23% acetone and 77% chloroform. The results are in reasonable agreement with literature values of acetone-chloroform mixture. REFERENCE (1) Daniels, F. ; Williams. J. W. Bender, P. ; Alberty, R. A. ; Cornwell, C. D. In an instant I was up on my feeling and puncturing my hand into the wall at that second I felt my hand go numb. I flushed with anger and hate, I wanted to destroy everything in my way, I started to push everything down making them shatter into smithereens, and I couldn’t stop myself. My mother rushed in the room trying to hold me down. Information on the Computer-Based GED Test

Information on the Computer-Based GED Test In 2014, the GED Testing Service, the only official keeper of the GED test in the United States, a division of the American Council on Education, converted the official GED test to a computer-based version for the first time. However, its important to realize that computer-based is not the same thing as online. GED Testing Service states that the test is no longer an endpoint for adults, but rather a springboard for further education, training, and better-paying jobs. The latest version of the test has four assessments: Literacy (reading and writing)MathematicsScienceSocial Studies The scoring system provides a profile of scores that includes a students strengths and areas of needed improvement for each of the four assessments. This scoring system gives non-traditional students the opportunity to demonstrate job and college readiness through an endorsement that can be added to the GED credential. How the Change Came About For several years, the GED Testing Service worked closely with many different education and career experts while making the changes it sought. Some of the groups involved in the research and decisions: High schoolsTwo- and four-year colleges and universitiesEmployersNational Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)Adult educators from around the countryNational Center for Improvement of Educational Assessment, Inc.Educational Policy Improvement Center at University of OregonEducation Division of ACTInstitute for Education Leadership and Policy Its easy to see that a high-level of research went into the changes in the 2014 GED test. The assessment targets are based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Texas and Virginia, as well as career-readiness and college-readiness standards. All of the changes are based on evidence of effectiveness. The bottom line, the GED Testing Service states, is that a GED test-passer must remain competitive with students who complete their high school credentials in the traditional manner. Computers Offer Variety in Testing Methods The switch to computer-based testing allowed the GED Testing Service to incorporate different testing methods not possible with paper and pencil. For example, the Literacy Test includes text ranging from 400 to 900 words, and 6 to 8 questions in a variety of formats, including: Multiple choice itemsBrief short answer itemsSeveral different types of technology-enhanced itemsCloze items embedded in passages (multiple response options that appear in a drop-down menu)One 45-minute extended response item Other opportunities provided by computer-based testing are the ability to include graphics with hot spots, or sensors, a test-taker can click on to provide answers to a question, drag-and-drop items, and split screens so the student can page through longer texts while keeping an essay on the screen. Resources and Study Help The GED Testing Service provides documents and webinars to educators across the country to prepare them for administering the GED test. Students have access to programs designed not only to prepare them for the test but to help them excel at it. There is also a transition network that supports and links adults with postsecondary education, training, and career opportunities, providing them a chance to earn a sustainable living wage. Whats On the Computer-Based GED Test? The computer-based GED test from GED Testing Service developed in 2014 had four parts: Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) (150 minutes)Mathematical Reasoning (90 minutes)Science (90 minutes)Social Studies (90 minutes) Its worth repeating that while students take the test on a computer, the test is not an online test. You must take the test at an official GED testing facility. You can find the testing centers for your location via state-by-state listing of adult education websites. There are seven types of test items on the exam: Drag-and-dropDrop-downFill-in-the-blankHot spotMultiple choice (4 options)Extended response (Found in RLA and Social Studies. Students read and analyze a document and write a response using evidence from the document.)Short answer (Found in RLA and Science. Students write a summary or conclusion after reading a text.) Sample questions are available on the GED Testing Service site. The test is available in English and Spanish, and you can take each part up to three times in a one-year period.

The Law and the Constitution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

The Law and the Constitution - Essay Example V. Dicey who made a robust restatement of this very old doctrine at the end of twenty-century. According to A. V. Dicey the principle of supremacy and sovereignty is the basis of the British Constitution. Parliament itself is not capable to confine its own future proceedings, courts cannot inquire or decline to give effect to its ratifications, and all other law-making institutions in the United Kingdom are secondary to it.Supremacy of Parliament is so magnificent and supreme, that it cannot be restricted, either for reasons or persons, under any circumstances. (Jennings, 1959) In other words, Parliament's supremacy can be estimated from the fact that it can do each fascination that is not naturally unattainable. The initial portion of Dicey's Law of the Constitution was dedicated to defying the unorthodox impression that there might be supposed boundaries to sovereignty and supreme. Dicey highly declared that the Parliament had authority and power to make or unmake any law whatever. For historical authority, Dicey naturally sought recourse to the Act of Settlement and to the pervasive constitutional traditions that dangle about the great and glorious revolution of 1688. Sovereignty had to be free, and it was for this motive that Dicey appeared so sideways at the very suggestion of international law, or undeniably those legal orders that sought to somehow share authority and power. Supremacy of Parliament can be divided into three significant essentials: firstly Parliament can formulate or unmake any law; secondly Parliament cannot force its heirs and lastly Courts cannot inquire an act of Parliament. In the light of the European Communities Act 1972 Parliament can still only do this if the legislation is not an EU parameter or instruction and is only conjugal legislation. Parliament cannot for instance rescind an Act that a EU dictate had structured the administration to make as they did in the case of Commission of the EC v United Kingdom (1979). Further the reality that Parliament cannot bind its successors is considerable. This originally predestined that a current, say Conservative government could not execute legislation that would come into power when a Labour government came into power. Now this refers to the EU in that the British government cannot outdo any legislation that would in future conflict with any recommended legislation of European Union. M ost notably according to the doctrine of Supremacy of Parliament, the courts of United Kingdom are not capable to inquire an act of Parliament. It is the reason that any proceed of Parliament is the ultimate law of the land, obligatory all through the territory, and alterable only by another act of Parliament. Parliament is defined as a congregation poised of the Commons, the Lords chronological and devout, and the Crown. Only these three institutions acting collectively include the sovereign Parliament, and were able to make law supreme throughout the realm. The Crown, Lords, and Commons unprejudiced each other; their contending interests fashioned political strains within Parliament to efficiently contain its implementation of unbounded supremacy. The Crown in Parliament obsessed total and unrestricted legislative supremacy, having the right to make or

Positive Thinking and Its Power

POSITIVE THINKING and ITS POWER Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind, thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favourable results. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action. Whatever the mind expects, it finds. Not everyone accepts or believes in positive thinking. Some consider the subject as just nonsense, and others scoff at people who believe and accept it.Among the people who accept it, not many know how to use it effectively to get results. Yet, it seems that many are becoming attracted to this subject, as evidenced by the many books, lectures and courses about it. This is a subject that is gaining popularity. It is quite common to hear people say: â€Å"Think positive! † to someone who feels down and worried. Most people do not take these words seriously, as they do not know what they really mea n, or do not consider them as useful and effectiveWhen the attitude is positive we entertain pleasant feelings and constructive images, and see in our mind's eye what we really want to happen. This brings brightness to the eyes, more energy and happiness. The whole being broadcasts good will, happiness and success. We walk tall and the voice is more powerful. Our body language shows the way you feel inside. In order to turn the mind toward the positive, inner work and training are required. Attitude and thoughts do not change overnight. Think about its benefits and persuade yourself to try it.The power of thoughts is a mighty power that is always shaping our life. This shaping is usually done subconsciously, but it is possible to make the process a conscious one. Even if the idea seems strange give it a try, as you have nothing to lose, but only to gain. Ignore what others might say or think about you, if they discover that you are changing the way you think. Always visualize only f avourable and beneficial situations. If you persevere, you will transform the way your mind thinks. Once a negative thought enters your mind, you have to be aware of it and endeavour to replace it with a constructive one. The negative thought will try again to enter your mind, and then you have to replace it again with a positive one. It is as if there are two pictures in front of you, and you choose to look at one of them and disregard the other.Persistence will eventually teach your mind to think positively and ignore negative thoughts. In case you feel any inner resistance when replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, do not give up, but keep looking only at the beneficial, good and happy thoughts in your mind. Mcdonald’s vs Burger King Essay

Let’s look at fast food restaurants. When you hear someone say, â€Å"Let’s go to McDonalds or Burger King,† what comes to mind would you consider the Big Mac or a Whopper? Think of how many calories that goes into each one. When you look at the Big Mac your calorie count is, â€Å"540 with 29 grams of fat and 45 grams of carbohydrates. † The Whopper shows, â€Å"670 calories, 39 grams of fat and 51 grams of carbohydrates. †(www. associatedcontent. com) So which is healthier, McDonald’s wins this one. Less calories in the Big Mac than the Whopper even though Burger King promotes flame broil is better and much healthier. When walking in the restaurants of McDonald’s you get the since of not welcomed until it is your turn to order. Looking around the place, it is clean yet not many people stay to eat there. One or two people will sit and chat for a while before leaving and making their order. One thing is true about McDonald’s, if they mess up your order while you are still there, they will make it correctly and bring it to your table nice and hot no matter what it was you ordered. Now for Burger King, when you enter their door the cashier says â€Å"Welcome to Burger King, can I take your order,† this research has been done in several restaurants in the area. Once you have placed your order you are given a number and a cup to fill your drink, by the time you are done filling your drink you food is ready to go. Looking around the restaurant there are a number of patrons sitting eating laughing and joking around with one another so the atmosphere is a warm and inviting one. McDonald’s seems to be more of a get it and go type of place and Burger King was sit for a while and chat. The goals of each restaurant are simple. The customer is first, satisfaction is a must. We all know that it’s not as simple as it sounds. Let’s compare the two, at Burger King’s customers are greeted with a smile when you walk in, when a customer places an order they have a choice of dining in or take it to go. The customer is given an option to say, â€Å"I will dine in or take it to go,† this shows they are given customers a choice of what they want to do. McDonald’s on the other hand, satisfaction is number one also, but you’re not greeted with a smile, sometimes it seems that the cashiers don’t want to work there or they just seem so tired. When placing an order the customer have to wait for at least five minutes before it is ready. Not so good in the fast food world of service, but satisfaction is what they are striving to have. They both share the same goals but one is more of an over all than the other. McDonald’s have a goal of satisfying their customers at 100% but they sometimes fail at making this goal work. How does the public differ in the choices of McDonald’s over Burger King? For one which taste better, which has better quality, would the customer prefer flame broiled over fried. Take a taste test first, McDonald’s signature burger the Big Mac; as the commercial says, â€Å"Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickle and onions on a sesame seed bun. † When the customer orders it in the restaurant, it is in fact, much smaller compared to the advertisement suggest. When doing this research, two out of five people got what they really wanted; the other three had to ask for more sauce and less lettuce. When the order was received, it was sloppy, sauce on the sides of the bun and not on the burger. The taste was satisfactory but if you present something that isn’t prepared right the taste falls short. Burger King’s signature burger the Whopper; â€Å"Beef patty, sesame seed bun, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, sliced onions, flamed broiled on a sesame seed bun. † Research shows out of the five customers that were tested at Burger King, each customer got exactly what they ordered and was satisfied with the taste of the meal. One even asked for an extra slice of cheese. Burger King satisfied more customers in the area of taste. Which has better quality of food? This falls very hard when thinking about both restaurants. McDonald’s and Burger King have in fact, had good quality but one out shines the other. As it was stated before McDonald’s Big Mac was served sloppy that was not quality service. In terms of Burger King, the customers were very satisfied with the quality of food and service that they received. Looking at the companies goals is a major difference. Let’s take the Mc Donald’s organization, one hundred percent customer satisfaction. When looking at this goal, it’s not always reachable. When this goal is not met, they will do what ever it takes to fix the problem. The next goal that puts them at a higher standard than other competitors, it’s founded on giving back to the community with the Ronald Mc Donald House and Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities. In each restaurant and drive thru there’s a donation box so money can be placed into helping the charities. So many times there have been full boxes of money given. Over the years McDonald’s has given millions of dollars back to communities in an effort to help children in need of care. Burger King was founded in 1953, the worlds #2 hamburger chain since McDonald’s. All of the burgers cooked at Burger King are prepared by grilling over flamed fire. When looking at how the structure works for them, Burger King doesn’t advertise their products like most competitors. There is no way Burger King can produce more sales than McDonald’s due to their marketing strategy which puts them at a disadvantage with McDonald’s. Where they can improve on this, they can do more advertisement of their products and open more chains around the world. Burger King does offer its â€Å"own in house charitable organizations† and programs which is the â€Å"Have It Your Way Foundation,† which is also a â€Å"US based non-profit corporation to alleviate hunger and disease prevention. (http://en. wikipedia. org) However Burger King also offers Scholarship Programs for millions of high school children across the United States which is in the memory of the co-founder James W. McLamore. This year alone they have awarded more than $1. 4 million in scholarship funds to 1,258 students and they also have four new awards that they give out but the major scholarships includes one King $25,000 and three James W. McLamore Whopper scholarship $50,000. (Burger King Corporation) The interaction with the public for both restaurants is very different. When walking in the restaurant the employees are very busy taking orders. The sense of urgency is upon them to get the food out fast and perfect. Once the order is placed, there is no time to talk however at Burger King, while waiting on your order the manager has time to chit chat with you. Managers make sure that the environment is warm and inviting. The employees that are cleaning around the tables and chairs make sure that they do notice you. There have been times where the employee asks if they could get something more or a refill. This is what customer service should be like. McDonald’s, on the other hand, there is no sense of warmth. Maybe one person may look your way and ask is everything’s alright, but that’s as far as the conversation will go. At both restaurants there is a difference between the employee and manager. They both have different shirts and tags. Sometimes though it could be hard to tell the difference because if you go to the restaurant late at night it’s more lax than the day time hours where you will have employees and mangers playing around but still doing their jobs. One other thing that these companies do, they do hire the less fortunate, meaning people with disabilities. Both companies start with their signature logo and end with their logo, major difference McDonald’s only takes the order. Sometimes it’s hard to understand what is being said over the pa and the order may get mixed up but there is time when getting to the window to fix it. Not all the time at McDonald’s does the employee have the food ready so the customer is asked to pull over and food will be brought out to them? On one occasion, while waiting for the order as the minutes passed by, no order was delivered. The customer had to go into the restaurant to get the order and it was still not what the customer ordered. One would wonder how many times this has happen in the past. Is drive thru really fast and easy? Thinking it may be better to order inside so the order can be done properly. Burger King Employees smile when taking and giving the orders. Even in the drive thru, the smile can be heard over the pa when placing an order. If a customer has to wait on their order thru the drive thru, they are asked to pull around the front and someone will be out with the order. It is never long that you will have to wait maybe two minutes at the most and the food is hot when it is received. There are healthy choices on the both menus, but do customers often choose the healthy choice? Not always. Looking at the choices of the menus: In some states McDonald’s is required to show the calorie count for the customers. On their boxes that the food comes in, there is also a calorie count that the customer can look at and see just how many calories is listed for the choice that was made for the order.

Future Of E-Commerce Essays - Retailing, E-commerce, Free Essays

Future Of E-Commerce Essays - Retailing, E-commerce, Free Essays Future Of E-Commerce 1 The Future of E-Commerce Future 2 THE FUTURE OF E-COMMERCE There are varying opinions regarding the future of e-commerce. Despite the fact that online sales are growing exponentially, some analysts believe that e-commerce is heading for a fall. Laurie Windham justifies her belief that as time goes on, sales will decrease instead of increasing. Windham believes that net consumers are very different than mall shoppers and catalog shoppers. Furthermore, she says that dot-coms are responsible for ruining their own chances to sell because they have spoiled customers to the point that consumers expect cheap prices and freebies and if they don't get them, they just move on to another site. E-commerce, Windham says, is a fickle world with little, if any, customer loyalty (Fortune, 2000). Windham found some interesting differences between online shoppers and traditional shoppers. For instance, 34 percent of online shoppers describe themselves as comparison shoppers but only 8 percent of traditional shoppers describe themselves as comparison shoppers. Another comparison is that only 1 percent of Web shoppers say they hate stores but 10 percent of traditional shoppers say they hate stores (Fortune, 2000). Web shoppers are by and large comparison, price-sensitive consumers. Future 3 Windham, who spent two years studying the consumers who purchase online, said that as nonusers begin to use the Web for purchasing, they will be less adventuresome than people already making purchases online. They will also be slightly older than the norm and they will be more fearful and cautious about privacy and security. In other words, as nonusers begin using the Web to shop, they will be a more conservative group than current users. It is probable they will also be less fickle and more loyal to brands/stores (Fortune, 2000). Windham pointed out that there were numerous problems with people receiving exactly what they ordered online during last holiday season. Based on that, she suggested sales may be lower this year (Fortune, 2000). Surveys conducted after the last holiday season suggested online shoppers would continue shopping online. One survey, for instance, indicated that more than 90 percent of consumers reported that shopping online met or exceeded their expectations. Eighty percent said they would increase their online shopping in 2000 (Rutledge, 2000). Studies found that consumer confidence in using the Internet for shopping reached very high levels, which were due to a number of factors. Positive comments from family and friends were one of the factors that swayed more people to utilize this option. Better selections from online stores also made the experience more satisfying. Finally, Future 4 secure credit card transactions played a major role in increasing sales (Rutledge, 2000). Consumers were enticed to try shopping on the Internet by the massive marketing campaign last year for both dot-com stores and retail stores online. More than 70 percent of Net shoppers said they bought from e-commerce sites that offered free shipping. Another 54 percent said they were enticed by the discounts offered for their first online purchase. Forty percent used online coupons and 25 percent responded to the offer of free gifts for their online purchase (Rutledge, 2000). The Direct Marketing Association projected that sales generated from catalogs and the Internet would double in the next four years, reaching $3.33 billion (Entrepreneur, 2000). A study by Jupiter Communications agreed saying that sales would increase this holiday season. This study reported that holiday shoppers would spend almost $12 billion in online purchases between November 1 and December 31 this year, which represents a 66 percent increase over the same time period last year. The increase between the 1998 and 1999 holiday seasons was 126 percent. There is a slowdown in the degree of growth but it is still a substantial increase (Kontzner, 2000) The Gartner Group predicted a much larger growth this year. They projected sales of $19.5 billion. This group also believed that dot-com stores and retail stores online Future 5 would not spend as much money on advertising this year. Instead, they will spend

Terms for Time of the Day

Terms for Time of the Day Terms for Time of the Day Terms for Time of the Day By Mark Nichol Many terms, practical and poetic, refer to various periods in the day or to related figurative senses. Here is a selection, ranging from regular to rare. Dawn (from Old English dagian, â€Å"to become day†), a word for the beginning of the day, also figuratively describes beginnings in general, especially in the sense of renewal or second chances. Daybreak is a practical synonym. A poetic variant is aurora, from the Latin name for the Roman goddess of dawn; the adjectival form is auroral. (The word is related to the Latin term auster, meaning â€Å"south wind,† from which the name of Australia is derived; the similar name Austria, by contrast, stems from the Germanic cognate of east, though auster and east are related.) Aurora is usually associated with the aurora borealis and the lesser-known aurora australis, atmospheric phenomena occurring, respectively, in and near the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The name for Easter, derived from the name of a Germanic goddess, is associated with the brightness of dawn and is related to east. Matutinal (from Matuta, an earlier Roman goddess later identified with Aurora) is an adjective referring to the morning; matins, the canonical term for the morning hours, and matinee, referring to an early performance, are related terms. Twilight (from an Old English term probably meaning â€Å"half-light†) is the dim light of the early morning and late evening, as well as those times of the day, though the term almost invariably refers to the latter period. Figuratively, the word also refers to a vaguely defined intermediate state or a period of decline. Gloaming (from Old English glom, meaning â€Å"twilight† which, incidentally, is not related to gloom but is akin to glow, from glowan) declined in use in the eighteenth century except in certain dialects but is associated with Scotland and poetry because of its use by Scots poet Robert Burns and others. Crepuscular (from Latin crepusculum, meaning â€Å"twilight, dusk†) is an adjective that refers to the margins of the day, especially in the evening, and might be used, for example, to refer to animal behavior. (Crepuscule and its variant crepuscle are rare noun forms.) Dusk (from Old English dox, and related to dun and dust) is the late evening twilight (and, rarely, the beginning of morning twilight); its adjectival form, dusky, refers to darkness or obscurity. Terms for the beginning of the day other than dawn include sunrise and sunup, complemented by sunset and sundown; the archaic terms morn and eve survive as poetic alternatives to morning (from the Old English term morgen the phrase to morgenne is the precursor of tomorrow) and evening (from even, in the sense of â€Å"equilibrium†). Other terms for morning include cockcrow, from the customary early-morning call of the rooster, while eventide and evenfall are poetic synonyms for evening. Various terms derive from noon (ultimately from the Latin term nona hora, meaning â€Å"ninth hour,† though the sense shifted to â€Å"midday†): These include noontime, the poetic noontide, afternoon, and the rare forenoon. Diurnal (from the Latin word diurnalis, also the precursor of journal), refers to daytime or daytime activity; the antonym is nocturnal (from the Latin term nocturnus). Movie Adaptation - Essay Example Several scenes in this movie depict self-reflection. For instance; Griffin Mill a movie executive is stalked and threatened by a screenwriter whom he rejected. Mill sets out to find his stalker and kill him. He later gets a note informing him that he killed the wrong man. Mill offers his stalker to make his movie for silence. The greediness of Hollywood movie makers is brought out here. Mill then betrays Cahain, the mysterious writer, by getting into a romantic affair with Cahain’s girlfriend, June. June later tips Mill on the whereabouts of Cahain giving Mill the chance to murder him. Mill and June fall in love and live together depicting the immorality in Hollywood. 2) Double Indemnity (1994) Double Indemnity by Billy Wilder is considered a noir movie. In most noir movies, the male lead characters are considered weaklings. The motivations behind the deeds of the male lead character are inspired by the sexual appeal of a female character. The femme fatale character is clearly brought out in Double Indemnity. In this case, a treacherous woman makes a man commit a crime that will benefit her by using her sexual charms (Blair 58). There are promises of sex and money to the man if the deal is successful. Double Indemnity like every noir movie is in black and white. Elements of noir movie are incorporated in the movie Double Indemnity. To begin with the movie is in black and white. The movie is about Walter Neff, an insurance agent who gets into an affair with Phyllis the wife of Dietrichson, his client. Phyllis, the femme fatale, and Neff conspire and come up with an insurance scam that will make Mr. Dietrichson loss fifty thousand dollars. Neff is controlled by the urge to go to bed with Phyllis thereby succumbing to her request. Neff and Phyllis plan to escape if the scam goes through and Mr. Dietrichson murdered. Later Neff confesses on being part of the scam when Phyllis accuses him of being the mastermind. Sex has been used as a symbol of self destruct ion on the part of Neff. 3) The Silence of the Lambs Clarice Starling, a trainee in the FBI, is tasked to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Hannibal â€Å"the cannibal† upon being interviewed admits of his knowledge on where to find Buffalo Bill, a man who skins women and then wears their skin. In this movie, telling who the protagonist is and who the antagonist is can be a problem. Starling and Lecter play an important role. Starling seeks the help of Dr. Lecter who is locked up in a mental hospital. He likes her and offers her the details she needs on tracking down Buffalo Bill. Clarice Starling’s vulnerability gives the movie a turn when Dr. Lecter realizes that they have a lot in common; her parents died when she was still young while he was abused as a child. He likes her and is ready to help her at all costs. 4) Maltese Falcon (1941) In the novel Maltese Falcon, Miss Wonderly walks into Spade’s and Archer’s office premise after Effie informs Spade. Mis s Wonderly finds Spade all alone in the office. She tries to inform about her visit but takes moments before speaking. After a while of narrating her problem to him, Archer walks in, and Spade introduces him to her as his partner. In the movie, Miss Wonderly presents her case to Archer and Spade who are together in the office. There are several alterations noted. In the
